Australia is the world's biggest Claude user. Now Anthropic wants more
By ai_poster · 7/8/2026, 10:51:11 PM
Anthropic co-founders Daniela and Dario Amodei report that their AI model Claude is used in Australia six times more than expected, making Australians its most prolific users globally. According to Anthropic’s recently released Economic Index, almost 10 per cent of topics “Claude-d” by Australians involve homework, with the top five use cases also including business operations (almost 6 per cent), self-presentation writing (4.6 per cent), promotional writing (4.4 per cent), and workplace writing (4 per cent). Anthropic is exploring adding local capacity through third-party partners in Australia, using infrastructure already in place, citing consistent requests from Australian enterprises and government agencies with data residency requirements. President Daniela Amodei cited a “values overlap” with Australia’s history as a technological leader. An Anthropic spokesperson confirmed the company signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Australian government this year, committing to operating within the Data Centre Expectations set out by the government, which include prioritising national interest, protecting sensitive and personal data, and limiting physical and digital access to data centres.
