This summer, the author’s son learned to tread water, work through guitar chords, and chase pickleballs, leading her to conclude that technology cannot build character; lived experience is required. As artificial intelligence grows more capable of writing, researching, calculating, and creating, she says parents should ask what experiences still require their child to struggle, adapt, and grow. While apps can tune a guitar and the internet provides song chords, her 10-year-old must still build calluses on his fingertips and practice difficult strumming patterns repeatedly. Technology excels by removing friction, finishing sentences, correcting spelling, and recommending routes, but it eliminates the small struggles that build confidence and competence. The author is not anti-technology but wants children to understand the benefits of an analog life. There is value in the frustrations of learning, as the process is the point, and it develops resilience and a sense of pride. Digital games require persistence, but real-life activities require accountability, as teammates watch you miss and a music teacher hears every flat note. Character-building is less tangible on Roblox. Learning a sport or instrument is about becoming the kind of person who keeps showing up after missing the shot, hitting the wrong note, or failing the swim test, requiring patience and teamwork while building fundamental skills over time.
