Albanese at odds with Trump over AI rules, warns humans must be in co…

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, visiting Apple’s headquarters in Cupertino, California on his way to New York, urged the United States and China to heed tech-sector warnings about AI and strike a deal “in the interests of humanity,” saying he would speak to like-minded leaders at next week’s United Nations General Assembly. He said sitting on the sidelines was not an option, describing AI as a “global phenomenon,” and stressed the need for a global framework because AI is moving very quickly and humans must remain in control. Debate over AI’s pace is reaching an inflection point, with Anthropic chief Dario Amodei, backed by OpenAI’s Sam Altman and Space X’s Elon Musk, calling for a coordinated slowdown. Albanese wants the US and China to cooperate on a deal similar to the nuclear non-proliferation treaty signed in 1970. President Donald Trump has pushed back, arguing deceleration would give China the upper hand, and said he would establish a new “AI Force.” Australia is developing national standards for AI and data centres, which Albanese hopes to legislate early next year, and he has not ruled out changing copyright laws to attract AI investment.
