In the lanes of Kumartuli, artisan Indrajit Paul is creating one of Bengal's first AI-inspired Robot Durga idols, commissioned by Deshapriya Club in Kaliaganj, Uttar Dinajpur, for Durga Puja 2026. The concept began with an AI-generated visual, but experienced sculptors had to correct errors, including a missing weapon on one of Durga's arms and absent vahanas for Kartik, Saraswati and Lakshmi. Paul and his team are modifying the design while preserving its futuristic aesthetics, featuring a shape-shifting Mahishasur with a human body and water buffalo head. The idol will incorporate rechargeable electric-blue LED lighting embedded inside Durga's weapons, flowing hair and irises, creating a glowing robotic appearance without requiring a direct electrical connection, reducing fire risks. Paul estimates another month of work is needed. The Durga Puja pandal will also follow a robot-inspired concept developed from AI-generated designs, with every major visual element reflecting artificial intelligence and robotics. Paul stated that technology can enhance human imagination, but divine power remains supreme and nothing can replace it.
