Amazon Web Services CEO Matt Garman pushed back against Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei's prediction that AI could wipe out half of all entry-level white-collar jobs within five years, arguing instead that technology will reshape rather than eliminate those roles. Speaking on Casey Newton's Platformer podcast, released Tuesday, June 23, Garman stated, "Wipe out and change are different." He reasoned that if half of jobs were wiped out, "the whole economy collapses on itself and everything goes away, and then you're not going to have AI, and you have to go back to those other jobs at some point. The math doesn't work out." Garman, who runs AWS—a roughly $150 billion-a-year operation and Anthropic's primary training partner—used the analogy of spreadsheet software like Microsoft Excel, which eliminated hand-calculation jobs but led workers to learn computers and move on. "New jobs will be created," he said. Amodei had warned Axios in May 2025 that AI could spike unemployment to 10-20% and eliminate half of entry-level roles across tech, finance, law, and consulting.
