Apple has rolled out a substantial update to Final Cut Pro, with the headline addition being automatic captions. Generate Captions uses on-device AI to transcribe a clip’s audio and place the subtitles directly onto the timeline, arriving as part of a wider Apple Creator Studio update covering Final Cut Pro, Logic Pro, Pixelmator Pro and more. Captions can be styled, animated and adjusted for font, colour and position. The other significant addition is Edit Detection, which analyses a rendered video and splits it back into its original clips on the timeline. Mac users also get Auto Mask, which isolates recognised objects for grading without manual tracking, a rebuilt Match Color for unifying footage across cameras, Advanced Trimming, the ability to send a frame to Pixelmator Pro, and new Creator Themes. Generate Captions is currently available in US English only. Hardware requirements include a Mac with Apple silicon running macOS 15.6 or later, or an iPad with M1, A16 or A17 Pro running iPadOS 26 or later. Apple’s AI additions are aimed at speeding up work editors already do rather than generating footage from scratch, and running on-device rather than in the cloud.
