OpenAI has been testing ads in ChatGPT since February, with the first ads shown on 9 February 2026, initially in the US only for signed-in adults on Free and Go plans. As of 6 August, the Ads Manager Availability page listed Australia, Canada, Japan, Korea, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and the United States as available, while Brazil and Mexico carry the note "Coming Soon." Germany does not appear in the table at all. On 7 May, OpenAI said it planned to expand to the United Kingdom, Mexico, Brazil, Japan and South Korea in the coming weeks; three of those five markets now show as available, but Brazil and Mexico still do not. Ad controls inside ChatGPT remain limited to Free and Go users in the US. Ads appear on Free and Go plans, while Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu stay ad-free. Accounts believed to belong to minors get no ads, temporary chats get none, and ads do not run in the ChatGPT Atlas browser during the test, though Atlas is being shut down on 9 August. Ads sit below a response, are labelled sponsored, and are barred from appearing near sensitive topics including physical health, mental health and politics; political advertising is not allowed at all. To remove ads, users can upgrade to Plus or Pro, use the Ads-Free switch on the Free plan—which drops message limits and removes tools like image generation and deep research—or use temporary chats.
