OpenAI has strengthened its political influence staff by hiring Jessica Schumer from Amazon to lead its “policy and partnerships” operations in the Northeast. Schumer is the daughter of Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and a longtime corporate politicker for Big Tech. OpenAI told the New York Post that “Jessica will focus on state and local public policy efforts and not federal policy or engagement with Congress. She will not be involved in any advocacy before the Minority Leader or his office related to OpenAI business.” The article argues this does little to address that Democratic leadership, and Chuck Schumer specifically, have been tepid and lethargic despite the rapid pace of AI industrial buildout and grassroots politics surrounding data centers. It says the senator played a major role in blocking oversight of the industry behind both his children’s paychecks, and that Jessica Schumer’s hiring shows powerful people and families of both parties are intertwined with corporate behemoths people are organizing against. It cites a 2023 YouGov poll in which 85% of respondents believed children of presidents “always or sometimes profit off of their parents’ positions in government,” and says she built a career advancing Big Tech’s legislative agenda in New York, a state her father has held elected office in for literally half a century.
