A recent New York Times investigation found that fake AI-generated doctors and health gurus are sharing unproven medical advice and peddling dubious supplements on Facebook and Instagram. The AI videos feature avatars posing as credible figures like doctors or Eastern medical gurus, often with American flags or in suburban settings, and one fake diploma read “University of Degree.” One AI-generated Asian grandma in a labcoat claimed, “In Chinese medicine, we have known exactly how to bring this down for generations.” An ad for a supplement called “Sculptique” asserted it treats kidney disease better than medication, showing an AI-generated video of 100 fake recipients raising supplement bottles. A 71-year-old named Pamela Wundrow told the NYT she bought moringa from Rosabella after seeing Facebook ads; months later, federal regulators announced a recall because contaminated pills were sickening people with salmonella. Wundrow said her health got worse. One Chinese company, which the NYT does not identify, claims to churn out 1,200 AI videos every day, each costing just $10 to make. Its head of AI marketing, Vivi Yi, admitted that “weight management” is used instead of claiming to “lose weight.”
