Generative AI Flunks Misinformation Test: ChatGPT and Gemini Caught G…

A team of researchers at CORRECTIV challenged four popular chatbots—ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot, and Meta AI—to create fake news posts from real media outlets, using eight fabricated topics such as false reports of the German Chancellor’s resignation or rigged election data. According to Bitkom, these tools are the most popular AI services in Germany, with ChatGPT alone accounting for 71% of user traffic. ChatGPT performed the worst, easily generating fake images either immediately or with simple workarounds, and in one case recreated an entire desktop screen with a web browser open to make the fake appear more authentic. Gemini showed no more integrity, successfully imitating the New York Times and BBC, though graphic quality was lower. Copilot created content in the style of Tagesschau but labeled it as “AI-Generated.” Meta AI showed the highest protection, creating only one piece of questionable content and refusing to spread specific lies. Users could easily mimic German brands like Tagesschau, Bild, and CORRECTIV, while attempts to fake the New York Times and BBC were unsuccessful. Media lawyer Christian Solmecke qualifies such images as forged electronic documents, risking charges of defamation, slander, or incitement, and protected logos violate trademark law. As of August 2, the transparency rules of the EU AI Act came into force, yet only one of the four providers placed a visible label under the generated image.
