Hugging Face CEO Clem Delangue argued on Bitcoin World’s Equity podcast that open source AI is essential for preventing a handful of large companies from controlling the technology’s future. Hugging Face, described as a GitHub for machine learning, hosts thousands of open models and datasets and is used by roughly half of the Fortune 500. Delangue noted that as companies scale, the cost and flexibility advantages of open source models become attractive. He pointed to Anthropic’s decision to halt its Fable model release as an example of tensions surrounding closed development, warning that control by a few large corporations could reduce innovation, raise costs, and lessen accountability. Delangue highlighted that a significant portion of open models downloaded in the United States now originate from Chinese institutions, arguing the U.S. should invest more in its own open source efforts rather than restrict it. He also stated Hugging Face turned down a large investment from Nvidia last year to prioritize capital efficiency and long-term independence. Delangue believes robotics presents an urgent case for openness, as a robot operating in a home will have access to highly sensitive personal data.
