A press release published June 24, 2026, from New York, NY, reports that people are quitting ChatGPT due to money and privacy concerns, fueled by the #QuitGPT campaign that began in February. The release states that Hugging Face hosts more than 2M open models, and from June 2026 onwards, the company added Atomic Chat, a free open-source app, to its Local Apps lineup, allowing thousands of those models to install on a normal laptop or phone. The release explains that models are files of a few gigabytes containing "weights" published openly by Meta, Google, DeepSeek and other labs, which can be downloaded and run locally on a user's hardware. Key reasons cited include: the Hugging Face listing removes technical barriers with a "Use this model" button and no account required; free models are not freemium, unlike ChatGPT Plus, Claude Pro and Perplexity Pro which each charge $20 a month ($240 a year per app); and a downloaded model file is yours to keep, unlike when OpenAI pulled GPT-4o from the ChatGPT app overnight after GPT-5 launched.
