Nearly 900 residents of Grimes County, Texas, signed a petition calling for more stringent regulations on large infrastructure projects that receive public incentives, and presented it to the County Commissioner Court on Wednesday. The petition, inspired by recent tax breaks the county granted SpaceX for its planned 100-million-square-foot Terafab semiconductor factory, demands a local oversight process, measurable commitments for local hiring, and pollution controls. About 30,000 people live in Grimes, roughly an hour outside Houston. SpaceX agreed to pay the county $20 million every year, or about 78% of what it would have paid in property taxes, according to SpaceX attorney Bucky Brannen. Marie Egyed of Grimes County Citizens for Responsible Development said it was unclear if the demands would apply to the Terafab factory or only new projects. The Terafab project is a joint venture with Tesla and Intel, and SpaceX's Jordan Buss called it "strategically vital" for the U.S. to compete in the AI race. The petition states, "Public benefits should require public protections." Grassroots campaigns across the country are resisting AI infrastructure projects, and some towns have ordered moratoriums or bans on new data center construction. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott paused new data center construction on Monday.
