The Illinois Assistive Technology Program (IATP), a nonprofit connecting people with disabilities to resources, is using Meta AI glasses to improve accessibility. IATP Director of Training Jessica Schuyler-Weir said the glasses have a "very, very small learning curve" and that the goal is to figure out how they will benefit adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities who want to work in the community. New Illinois laws are closing sheltered workshops that provide sub-minimum wage, and IATP is helping those with disabilities transition to other job opportunities. The glasses can read instructions or follow written processes, helping users reference procedures by asking, "Meta, what’s the last step?" IATP received a Meta AI Glasses Impact Grant, becoming one of 30 organizations nationwide selected for funding, which allows users to provide feedback directly to Meta. Meta Public Policy Manager of Wearables Darren Touch said feedback from the accessibility community is essential as the technology is built. IATP hopes to provide the glasses to approximately 25 people. The frames cost close to $400, and IATP may help with prescription lenses and smart devices to attach to the glasses.
