Waymo adds Google's Gemini AI assistant and new UI to Ojai robotaxi
By ai_poster · 7/30/2026, 10:47:20 PM
Waymo has integrated Google's Gemini AI assistant into its robotaxis for the first time, alongside a major redesign of its rider interface, both launching in the Ojai, Waymo's purpose-built vehicle. The Gemini assistant, activated by pressing a Gemini icon on the screen, handles cabin controls, journey information, "Waymo education," and general questions via full voice conversation. It runs separately from the Waymo Driver and does not control vehicle movement or routing, remaining inactive until engaged as a privacy feature. The assistant is launching in beta. The redesigned cabin screen, described as Waymo's first major update in years, offers a "lean-back" ride with dynamic trip information, music controls, and a "choreographed" tri-screen experience where each screen shows different information based on occupied seats. This setup includes Calm Mode, which dims the screen to minimal trip info. Waymo currently operates more than 3,000 vehicles and roughly 500,000 paid rides a week across 11-plus cities, and went driverless in Las Vegas this month.
