Louisiana governor addresses Meta AI data center electricity concerns

Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry issued an executive order on June 25, 2026, requiring data center companies to fully fund their electricity needs to qualify for state tax breaks, specifically the Data Center Sales and Use Tax Exemption program. Landry announced the Louisiana Ratepayer and Community Protection Initiative during a news conference in the Capitol, stating it ensures competitiveness for transformational investments while protecting families and businesses. Louisiana has become a national data center hub with four projects announced or underway, including Meta in Richland Parish and Amazon in Shreveport Bossier. Entergy Louisiana has committed to build 10 natural gas facilities to support the $27 billion Meta project. Entergy Louisiana President Phillip May and northern Louisiana Public Service Commissioner Foster Campbell have previously said the utility and Meta will cover all costs associated with that data center. However, a consultant for the Public Service Commission reported that all ratepayers could pay $8 per month for a power plant Entergy is seeking to buy in Texas, which May stated on June 19 is unrelated to the Meta data center and that the Meta-financed power expansion will save ratepayers about $2 billion. The Public Service Commission on April 19 approved a fast-track timeline for Entergy to seek final approval for seven additional power plants for Meta, after previously dedicating three new plants.
