Meta disabled its new Muse Image AI generator on Instagram after SAG-AFTRA and CAA criticized the tool, with Meta admitting they "missed the mark" amid privacy concerns over the automatic opt-in for users. The feature, introduced just days earlier, allowed users to generate images by @-mentioning public Instagram accounts, and Meta announced Friday that it is "no longer available." CAA had called for guardrails, stating that "no one’s name, image, likeness, voice, or creative work should be used by any third party, including AI models, without clear, documented consent." CAA commended Meta for its "swift decision to remove the Muse Image feature," emphasizing that "putting individual rights and consent at the forefront is essential to building responsible technology." SAG-AFTRA echoed concerns about "nonconsensual digital replicas," stating that "a feature that encouraged that behavior is unwise" and that "we appreciate its discontinuance."
