Marie Lansley, 36, a recent transplant to San Francisco, has been using AI chatbots as dating coaches and relationship helpers, consulting them for starting conversations on dating apps. She uses OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Anthropic’s Claude, while others use Elon Musk and X’s Grok, Google’s Gemini, and other chatbots. Dating apps and AI companies are leaning into the trend, with ChatGPT and Gemini posting customized relationship advice on TikTok. Dating coach Carey Gaynes, referencing the play "Cyrano de Bergerac," said, "Claude is the new Cyrano," noting daters of all ages turn to the technology, but she worries about overreliance. Lansley acknowledged the incongruency between romance and technology, stating, "AI is great at making dating more efficient. But the chemistry — that’s always going to be analog." She was startled by chatbots' apparent emotional intelligence during an onboarding call with the AI matchmaker on the app Known, where the bot asked questions "one or two levels deeper" than traditional apps, though her first match was not a perfect fit. Mason Naung, a 25-year-old student in Los Angeles, said he could see the benefit of chatbots for "icebreakers" during early exchanges on Hinge.
