Apple, OpenAI in ‘battle of the elephants’

Apple sued OpenAI on Friday in federal court in San Jose, accusing the San Francisco artificial-intelligence company of stealing its trade secrets. The lawsuit alleges that OpenAI has been stealing trade secrets via current and former employees and suppliers, and that more than 400 Apple employees have gone to work for OpenAI, with at least some intentionally taking trade secrets. Apple also claims OpenAI officials used hiring interviews to induce Apple employees to disclose confidential information. The complaint specifically names two former Apple employees: Tang Tan, OpenAI’s chief hardware officer, and Chang Liu, a technical staff member. Tan co-founded AI-device startup Io, which OpenAI acquired last July for $6.5 billion; he had worked at Apple for 24 years. Legal experts described the case as a “battle of the elephants,” noting both companies are behemoths with significant resources. The battle could affect OpenAI’s ability to enter Apple’s core gadget market, as OpenAI is developing devices built around its AI technology, which could undermine Apple’s phone sales.
