Apple’s trade secret lawsuit against OpenAI has dealt a fatal blow to its project of building a rival smartphone, threatening to crush the ChatGPT-maker’s hardware pipeline by choking off recruiting and wrapping its engineers in red tape. The lawsuit accuses OpenAI of executing a campaign to systematically poach Apple engineers and extract confidential hardware blueprints, poaching over 400 former Apple employees with massive compensation packages. The talent drain forced Apple to entirely rebuild parts of its engineering groups, leading executives to hand out massive retention bonuses. OpenAI, pairing ex-Apple engineers with designer Jony Ive and its AI, aimed to build a hardware competitor. The legal strike derails these ambitions by freezing OpenAI’s talent pipeline, making former Apple workers tight-lipped, and pulling engineers into compliance training. OpenAI initially believed it was on track to announce its first consumer hardware product later this year, targeting a full commercial release in 2027.
