Microsoft is testing Windows AI features on RTX GPUs, expanding the tools beyond NPUs via the Windows App SDK 2.2 Experimental 9. This update enables RTX 30‑series GPUs with at least 6GB VRAM to run AI tasks locally, requiring developers to use Windows Insider builds and Developer Mode. Features such as text rewriting, Photos app Super Resolution, object extraction, and erase tools can now run on existing GPUs. Copilot+ was originally tied to NPUs, but Microsoft is shifting to a flexible setup using GPUs when possible and the cloud when needed. This opens AI access without waiting for new hardware, allowing older PCs with RTX cards to handle AI workloads and making Windows 11 more inclusive. The rollout remains experimental, with wider support expected in the coming months.
