OpenAI has rolled out updates to its ChatGPT Chrome extension and desktop app that let the tool read open tabs, react to highlighted text, and answer questions about YouTube videos. The update arrived shortly after OpenAI shelved its standalone Atlas browser to shift its focus toward tools people already use. Inside the Chrome extension’s Side Chat, users can reference open tabs directly, highlight text on a page to ask questions about that exact section, and ask about any YouTube video, which ChatGPT will read directly without requiring a manual summary request. A right-click shortcut on any page opens the sidebar automatically with an “Ask ChatGPT” option. The desktop app now suggests URLs as you type, works like a normal browser address bar, and allows users to dig back through browsing history from Settings, which ChatGPT can search when a task calls for a previously visited page. Smaller updates include a new Activity view in the sidebar showing recently engaged chats and those needing attention, simpler code review across multiple repositories in one project, and generated images opening in an expanded viewer where comments can be left before requesting edits.
