Chey Tae-won says semiconductors exit cycles, enter structural shift …

SK Group chairman Chey Tae-won said on the 10th (local time) that the semiconductor market has moved beyond a "cycle industry" and entered a "structural change," meaning it is no longer an industry where simple oversupply and shortages repeat. After attending the opening bell ceremony for SK hynix American depositary receipt (ADR) listing at the Nasdaq headquarters in New York, Chey told Korean media that "a clear structural change has already taken place" and "it has become clear that it no longer moves in the old pattern of oversupply cycles." He added that "the gap between supply and demand is very large," citing "enormous lead time to build semiconductor fabs and produce wafers" and "many infrastructure bottlenecks." Chey said AI technology is "only at the level of a 4- to 5-year-old child" and advancing to artificial general intelligence will require "an unimaginable amount of data training and application operation," making memory demand "inevitably continue trending upward." He noted demand from big tech clients "is exceeding expectations" and "their requested volumes are far greater than we initially expected." On a potential stock split for SK hynix, Chey said, "If there are more requests, we will of course consider it," and SK hynix president Song Hyun-jong added, "It is something we can consider."
