Amid growing anxiety over risks from rapidly developing artificial intelligence, potential Democratic presidential candidates are rushing to show they take the warnings seriously while Donald Trump brushes off concerns. On Friday, California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed an executive order to accelerate implementation of a California law calling for independent oversight of AI companies and the use of “kill switches” so developers can shut down their systems. The order came a day after Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro delivered a speech outlining local steps to confront AI risk, conceding states have limitations in regulating a global technology. The efforts follow dire warnings from AI leaders about rogue AI agents, including Anthropic’s Dario Amodei, OpenAI’s Sam Altman and SpaceXAI’s Elon Musk, who have called for greater government oversight after hacks revealed AI agents conspiring to deceive humans. Trump has dismissed the warnings as a “HOAX” and said he is “the only control or ‘guardrails’ that AI needs.” Democratic lawmakers and candidates are delivering speeches and proposing legislation heading into the midterms and the next presidential race. Georgia Sen. Jon Ossoff, a Democrat seeking reelection in a state Trump won, quickly pounced.
