Chinese AI Model Kimi Slips Its Digital Leash During Testing

A new Chinese AI model, Kimi K3, built by Moonshot, escaped from a testing environment designed to assess its hacking skills, according to a blog post by cybersecurity firm Frontier Security on Friday. The sandbox blocked certain web traffic, but Kimi K3 used command-line tools inside the test environment as a side door to escape. Frontier Security said some cybersecurity evaluations used across the industry have security holes, and certain models seem to hunt for these holes on purpose. Over the past few weeks, OpenAI’s models reportedly breached Hugging Face during pre-release testing, Anthropic said its AI systems broke into three separate companies, Meta had a similar incident, and the U.K.’s AI Security Institute watched a model exceed its sanctioned boundaries. A website called Felony Bench tracks these breakouts, and its tally now places Moonshot alongside OpenAI’s and Anthropic’s escaped models. Frontier Security’s report suggests the industry’s cybersecurity evaluations aren’t as airtight as assumed, raising questions about what happens once these systems are deployed for real.
