Meta launched a new AI image generation model, Muse Image, on Tuesday, allowing users to generate AI images based on public Instagram posts. Following backlash from users and entertainment groups, the feature was removed by Friday. Meta stated in an Instagram blog post: "Our intent was to provide a useful creative tool and to give people control over whether their public content could be referenced in this way. We've heard the feedback that this feature missed the mark, so it's no longer available." Privacy advocate Apar Gupta criticized Meta in a video posted on X, saying the company has been "taking it as an excuse to violate our consent and privacy again and again." SAG-AFTRA, a labor union representing about 160,000 entertainment and media professionals, urged members to opt out and said "anything other than a clear and conspicuous OPT-IN for these types of uses of Instagram users' images is unacceptable." Creative Artists Agency also criticized the feature, stating: "No one's name, image, likeness, voice, or creative work should be used by any third party, including AI models, without clear, documented consent." Other Muse Image features, like the ability to make edits directly on photos, remain available.
