TechCrunch Mobility: Zoox prepares for launch and Uber’s AV empire | …

Amazon-owned Zoox will begin charging for robotaxi rides starting August 10, following an exemption from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The exemption allows Zoox to operate a fleet of up to 2,500 vehicles commercially for two years, despite lacking traditional controls like a steering wheel and pedals. This also paves the way for other autonomous vehicle developers, such as Tesla with its Cybercab, to launch similar vehicles. Separately, Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi confirmed the company would commit $10 billion “over the coming years” to deploy 120,000 driverless vehicles. Moove, a ride-hail fleet owner with 42,000 vehicles across 13 countries, has added an autonomous vehicle division and is the fleet operator for Waymo in Phoenix, Miami, and Las Vegas, with London planned for the future. The Dubai-based startup raised $250 million in a Series C round led by Mubadala Investment Company, with Woven Capital and Ion Pacific as co-leads.
