OpenAI and Sir Jony Ive’s first hardware collaboration is reportedly a screen-less, doughnut-shaped smart speaker, roughly the size of a hockey puck and similar in shape to an old Amazon Echo Dot. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman via The Verge, the device will be priced over $300, placing it in HomePod territory compared to Amazon’s Echo lineup starting as low as $40. The battery-powered unit is designed to be carried from room to room with one hand and will include moving parts, some of which may move to indicate interaction with the user. It is said to feature a camera system, several microphones, and ambient sensors, wrapped in Ive’s signature high-end industrial design. The device will work similarly to ChatGPT’s voice mode on smartphone apps but with more advanced models for humanlike interactivity. This marks a shift from earlier wearable and earbud rumors since OpenAI folded Ive’s io startup into its hardware division in May 2025. Court filings have suggested the device won’t reach customers before the end of February 2027.
