Researchers warn that AI-generated videos featuring fruit and vegetable characters committing gory violence are spreading extremist ideas and normalising graphic violence. The content is part of a rise in "brain rot" clips showing anthropomorphic foods in melodramatic plots, but some include "extreme mutilation, torture, and hyper-realistic violence." Other clips reference groups such as Islamic State (IS), neo-Nazi organisation Atomwaffen Division, and nihilistic subculture No Lives Matter. The Global Network on Extremism and Technology (GNET), backed by the Global Internet Forum to Counter Terrorism, issued the warning in a report. It said videos bypass TikTok’s rule against violent content by appearing innocuous at first glance, often using a "cute" or "Pixar-like" appearance to "soften" the image. One example replicated IS videos with a carrot making a potato "explode," while another featured a carrot "assassinating" a potato with a hammer. A "Carrot Khalifah" told his army "the Carrot State will rise again," alluding to an IS slogan. Two posts included hashtags used by terror group supporters. Gruesome drug cartel killings are mimicked in other clips, and "potato supremacy" refers to white supremacy. Researchers claimed this material is easily accessible, putting minors at risk of inadvertently consuming graphic content, and can lay the basis for online radicalisation. GNET wants TikTok to develop "countermeasures"; TikTok hasn't responded
