Mark Zuckerberg Is Borrowing Facebook's Old Playbook to Win the AI Ra…

Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta Platforms (NASDAQ:META), released a 6,500-word manifesto on the company's website Monday outlining plans to bring free versions of artificial intelligence to billions of people, envisioning personal AI assistants for finances, careers, hobbies, and relationships, and predicting AI will create jobs. He wrote, "We propose a philosophy based on individual empowerment as the source of prosperity, invention as the primary purpose of superintelligence, and balance of power as the foundation of safety," adding that "Superintelligence will be among the most important technologies in history." The approach echoes Zuckerberg's early Facebook playbook, which prioritized scaling and user engagement over profits, as seen when he focused on attracting 1 billion active users for the mobile app in 2010 rather than selling ads. That strategy succeeded, and by 2013, Facebook emphasized targeted ads. The company, renamed Meta in 2021, now operates Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger, and Threads, with an average of 3.5 billion daily users. Advertising accounts for nearly all of Meta's revenue, making up 97% of the company's $60.8 billion in the second quarter.
