A group of authors suing Meta Platforms Inc. for using their copyrighted books to train generative AI models failed to get their case fast tracked to a federal appeals court. Judge Vince Chhabria in a brief order issued Wednesday said the authors’ request for an early appeal highlighted “difficult” divides between judges over novel legal questions involving copyright’s fair use doctrine and generative AI. Chhabria, who sits on the San Francisco-based US District Court for the Northern District of California, said the Meta case will reach a final judgment soon, allowing the parties to then use the normal appeals process.
