Why the biggest AI risk for farmers is in the office, not the paddock
By ai_poster · 7/9/2026, 3:10:35 PM
A report from the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations, *AI and employment in Australia*, shows that the overall labour market remains strong, with unemployment sitting at 4.2 per cent. The report scores occupations by exposure to automation from generative AI, finding that routine cognitive jobs like clerks and data-entry operators are most at risk, while routine manual jobs carry less than half the exposure. The least-exposed occupations named include truck drivers, forklift drivers, carpenters and gardeners. Although the report does not name farmers or station hands, on-farm labour is described as about as insulated as work gets. However, agriculture is an enormous supply chain that runs on the kind of routine cognitive work most exposed to automation, meaning the biggest AI risk for farmers is in the office, not the paddock.
