The 93-year-old actor Michael Caine’s digitally cloned voice, replicated with his permission through a deal with ElevenLabs, is narrating Homer’s “Odyssey.” The London-based company, which launched in 2023, has a marketplace system that lets companies license AI-generated replicas of recognizable voices, including celebrities like Stan Lee and David Hasselhoff. Caine’s “Odyssey” narration is the first time the platform has used one of its famous voices to produce an audiobook. The audio retelling launched just before Christopher Nolan’s film adaptation lands in theaters. Throughout the audiobook, available on ElevenLabs’ ElevenReader platform, Caine’s voice clone is accompanied by other AI-generated character voices, music and sound effects. The audiobook was released amid Hollywood’s ongoing tension over AI, with AI companies increasingly striking licensing deals to avoid blowback from creatives. In January, ElevenLabs launched what it said is the first major AI-generated album made with full permission from human artists, including singer Liza Minnelli.
