The FBI is warning parents and students about AI-generated school threats, including fake images of the “Cat in the Hat” character threatening schools, WMTV reports. Dorothea Salo, who teaches at UW-Madison’s Information School, said image generators are being used like a sophisticated Photoshop, citing a case in Kentucky where cartoon characters such as the Cat in the Hat were placed around a school building implying the character would show up and do damage. Salo said the technology is outpacing efforts to regulate it and that change may not come until some people end up in courtrooms. Christopher Farrell, an assistant special agent in charge with the FBI, said most hoaxes start on Instagram, TikTok, or Facebook, often posted by teens who think it is harmless, and that individuals could be held criminally liable in state or federal court. Farrell said high school students or younger are usually the ones posting the threats, which are often very specific, such as a picture of a gun saying not to go to school tomorrow. Farrell said some threats stem from ordinary conflicts between students.
