The Centre has summoned Meta's global executive team to India on August 5 and 6 amid scrutiny over the social media giant's handling of content, following the brief removal and restoration of a Facebook video posted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) is not satisfied with Meta's explanation that the video was taken down due to a "technical error." Meta said on July 28 that the video, posted on July 23, was removed in error and restored. The video featured Modi addressing students amid protests over the NEET-UG 2026 examination paper leak, after which the Cabinet approved the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026, passed by both Houses of Parliament. The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Communications and Information Technology, chaired by Nishikant Dubey, sought details on the removal's circumstances, audit trail, restoration process, and preventive measures. Dubey said the committee sought an apology from Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and warned that safe harbour protection under Section 79 of the Information Technology Act could be withdrawn if the apology was not forthcoming. Concerns also included content moderation, algorithmic transparency, AI-generated misinformation, deepfakes, and child sexual abuse material (CSAM).
