The eighth inaugural lecture of Nile University of Nigeria examined the use of smart sensors, artificial intelligence, and advanced engineering technologies to detect machine faults and infrastructure weaknesses before major failures occur. Speaking in Abuja, Vice-Chancellor Professor Dilli Dogo stated that intelligent systems identifying early warning signals could transform maintenance and improve safety. The lecture, titled “Sensing the ‘Unsensible’: How Machines Whisper Their Secrets Before They Break,” was delivered by Professor Sadiq Thomas, Professor of Computer Engineering. Dogo explained that machines communicate impending failure through measurable signals like sounds, vibrations, and thermal changes. He noted that artificial intelligence now enables systems to analyze warning signals, predict failures, and initiate corrective responses. Dogo said Nile University is investing in research, particularly in engineering, medicine, and human services, and that its Faculty of Engineering acquired technologies, including ultrasound systems and scanners, for early detection of machine wear. He highlighted a fabrication laboratory for modeling and producing replacement components and mentioned plans for a Skills and Innovation School. He stressed that universities must provide practical skills and mentorship. Professor Thomas explained that advanced non-destructive testing (NDT) technologies can detect hidden defects without damaging structures, and integrating them with AI and computer modeling allows engineers to anticipate failures and intervene earlier.
