Italian engineers in Genoa developed the humanoid robot Gene.01 from concept sketch to a walking, sensing machine in six months. Generative Bionics revealed Gene.01 at AMD’s Advancing AI event in San Francisco, presenting it as a ready platform. The same team that showed a concept at CES in January delivered a complete, sensor-equipped robot by July. Gene.01 is covered in a layer that allows it to sense touch, temperature, proximity, and pressure simultaneously, enabling it to detect approaching people and modify its location. When touched, pressure data provides information about where the pressure is coming from and how hard it is applied. The control system treats the entire body, including mechanical design and decision-making, as a continuous flow, with models of the robot and human workers fed into the same optimization loop. This is based on years of study at the Italian Institute of Technology and a publication in Nature Machine Intelligence. Generative Bionics presents Gene.01 as a foundational platform customizable in three areas: the brain for specific jobs, the outer shell for a specific location, and replaceable hands and feet.
