Character AI appeared to be down for thousands of users on Wednesday, August 12, with over 1000 people facing issues at the time of writing, according to Downdetector. Users reportedly encountered problems starting at 2:09am ET. Many complained they were “kicked out” after entering their birth date, with one user saying, “was trying to log into http://c.ai and it asked for my date of birth and said I couldn't access it anymore, even though I was using the app just an hour ago.” Others on Downdetector and X echoed similar experiences, including a user who said, “im nearly 25 and it kicked me and locked me out,” and another who noted, “I’m litterally gonna be 26 in 2 days!” A cause for the problem is not known, and Character AI is yet to issue a statement. The platform can log out users if the birth date indicates they are under 13, but system glitches, browser cache issues, strict cookie blockers, or server-side sync errors may also cause lockouts. Suggested fixes include clearing the browser cache, using an incognito window, or trying a different device, though given the widespread nature of the issue, user-end fixes are not likely to work in this case.
