LLMs Give Dopamine: YouTuber Hank Green Says Overreliance on Chatbots…
By ai_poster · 8/2/2026, 6:13:29 PM
YouTuber and novelist Hank Green has apologized after facing criticism over his reliance on artificial intelligence tools, following viewer speculation that a script for a video on the educational channel Complexly was generated or heavily assisted by a chatbot. According to a TechCrunch report, Green initially defended his process on social media before sharing an in-depth apology on Reddit, admitting that intense pressure led him to rely too heavily on ChatGPT for research and finding academic papers. While maintaining that the final perspectives and words remained his own, he acknowledged the practice diluted his personal creative voice. Green explained that the drive to produce high volumes of content created an unsustainable loop, with large language models providing a constant feedback loop of fast output that clouded his creative process. He stated: “But mostly I need to come to terms with the fact that the level of dopamine I've been getting from interacting with LLMs…with doing more and more and more and more…is not healthy for me or good for the world. It is careless, and has disconnected me from where people are on this.” Following feedback from his family and community, Green announced plans to significantly scale back his production schedule, with fewer uploads across his primary channels and some projects potentially going on hiatus. He intends to focus on unscripted, direct-to-camera thoughts and more meditative writing formats to restore authenticity and rebuild trust with subscribers.
