I spent two years learning AI, then another year unlearning it

After spending two years learning about artificial intelligence-based tools, the author spent one year unlearning AI, realizing the greatest threat AI posed was not to her career, but to her mind. She uninstalled ChatGPT from her phone, not as a grand statement against technology, but to rescue a part of herself that had begun disappearing. She observed that the habit of turning to an AI tool starts innocently, eventually shifting the question from “what do I think?” to “what does AI think I should think?” She argues that generative AI offers to do the thinking before we have attempted it ourselves, removing the essential friction that good education has been built around for centuries. Psychologists call this cognitive offloading. After deleting ChatGPT, her life became slower; she began spending longer browsing the internet, talking to people, and reading instead of seeking summaries. She started remembering things again, her arguments became sharper, and she stopped confusing instant access to information with genuine understanding. Most importantly, she started writing again, which she describes as the slow process of discovering what one actually believes.
