Mastercard has formed a broad strategic partnership with OpenAI that includes the use of its Agent Pay infrastructure, CEO Michael Miebach said during the company’s Thursday (Oct. 29) earnings call, according to PYMNTS. Miebach said the agreement establishes collaboration across payments, joint services growth and AI transformation, and that Mastercard wants AI shopping agents to use tokenized versions of consumers’ chosen cards. He said Mastercard Agent Pay, which incorporates tokenization, is being used by Shopify’s Shop Pay and is included in the new OpenAI agreement. Asked how Mastercard can drive adoption for Agent Pay together with its OpenAI and Shopify partnerships, Miebach said trust in the agent is key, adding that consumers need to feel comfortable and merchants need to be discoverable. Mastercard also announced a partnership with Tencent’s cross-border payment platform TenPay Global, saying in a press release that the companies will explore new opportunities in agentic payments and greater cross-border payment interoperability. Mastercard and TenPay Global signed a memorandum of understanding for a proposed collaboration spanning QR acceptance for international visitors in the Chinese mainland, remittances into the Weixin/WeChat ecosystem and AI-enabled commerce, according to the release. In AI-enabled commerce, the companies will explore solutions such as Mastercard Agent Pay, Mastercard Agent Connect and Virtual C-Suite.
