Anthropic is shifting its hiring focus to product managers after deploying Claude Code internally, as engineering output has tripled. Amol Avasare, Anthropic’s Head of Growth, flagged the issue publicly, noting that engineering teams have been operating at "two to three times their effective headcount" since adopting the tool, with a "five-person team now ships like a team of 15 to 20." Since Claude Code’s research preview launched in "February 2025," over "80% of merged production code" was attributed to the AI coding system in some periods. The constraint has moved from engineering capacity to product management, as PMs who decide which features get built have not scaled. Anthropic is actively posting roles to close the gap, with product manager roles focused on Claude Code listed at "$305K to $460K," requiring both PM discipline and engineering fluency. Claude Code handles multi-file changes, writes and commits code autonomously, and manages repetitive implementation work, causing engineering roles to prioritize architecture and design over traditional coding. The company views product decision-making as scarce and valuable, using the output multiplier to justify a concrete change in its hiring mix.
