M-PESA Ethiopia and Gebeya Inc. have launched a new Mini App allowing users to purchase generative AI tools directly through their mobile wallets. The Gebeya Dala AI Mini App within the M-PESA ecosystem enables users to buy and deploy generative AI services using their mobile wallets. Users must register on the Gebeya Dala platform before accessing the Mini App, where they can select AI service bundles for software development, educational research, digital content creation, and business administration. Payment is executed via the M-PESA ledger, and the user receives an SMS with a voucher code to redeem AI credits. M-PESA is subsidizing the rollout by bundling 1GB of complimentary Safaricom data with every successful AI package purchase. This targets Ethiopia's software developers, university students, entrepreneurs, and digital creators, eliminating the need for international credit cards to pay for foreign AI services. The partnership reflects M-PESA’s pivot from a financial utility into a "Super App" model, inspired by Asian platforms like WeChat and Alipay, and unfolds amid a competitive continental fintech landscape.
