Starting mid-September, Spotify will label profiles of fictional artists created using artificial intelligence with the tag «AI Persona». Tracks from these profiles will not appear by default in personalised recommendations or editorial playlists, but users will still be able to find and listen to them. The label relates to the performer’s fictional persona, not the use of AI in a musician’s work. Initially, the service will check popular profiles with specific audience metrics. Profile owners can self-declare an AI persona, with verification by moderators and automated systems. If there are grounds for suspicion, the platform may assign the status «Likely AI Persona». The label will be visible on the artist’s page, in the information section, in search results, and alongside tracks in playlists. Spotify previously removed around 75 million spam tracks in a year. The Guardian reports the platform aims to help listeners distinguish between real musicians and fictional digital characters. Spotify stated that trust and authenticity form the basis of the connection between an artist and their audience. The new rules do not provide for removal of such music; it can be found via search or directly from the profile page, but algorithms will not promote these tracks alongside real artists.
