A 17-year-old Indian-origin teen, Arjun Aravind, has been charged with two counts of murder in Massachusetts in connection with the deaths of his mother, Sudha Venkatesan, 45, and his younger brother, Siddharth Aravind, 14. The two were found dead inside their Acton home on August 11. Authorities say Arjun had used ChatGPT and the internet to explore disturbing ideas and fantasies about killing his family before the deaths. Police were alerted after Arjun’s father could not contact his wife and children. Arjun had left the home in his mother’s car and was found by police the following morning in a parking lot in nearby Wayland. The ChatGPT detail has become a major focus of the follow-up investigation as authorities look into Arjun’s behaviour and online activity before the alleged killings. The exact role, if any, that the AI conversations played in the crime remains a matter for investigators and the courts. The case has triggered wider questions about how AI tools can be misused by people exploring violent thoughts. Authorities have not said that ChatGPT itself caused the alleged crime.
