Apple tried to 'sit out' AI, and now it's paying the price

Apple tried to "sit out" the AI boom, but the AI boom is affecting its results, Sherwood News head of markets Luke Kawa said on "The 8:30" with hosts Pras Subramanian and Jake Conley, discussing Apple's (AAPL) latest quarterly earnings. Kawa said slowing in Google search shows up "just a little" in Apple's results and weighs on its services business, and that Apple is not immune from every discussion turning into an AI discussion. The quarter was John Turnus's first earnings call "where he's really at the helm," with numbers "pretty good" but some weakness in guidance and China revenue "missing by about a billion dollars." On the call, Apple said memory pricing is "unprecedented" and that for the December quarter it expects "even higher memory costs," probably offset by factors like inventory; it said it has "secured purchasing obligations that have increased by 33 billion for memory from June to the September quarter." Kawa noted that in post-market trading Apple goes down while semis go up.
