Google DeepMind Chief AI Readiness Officer Lila Ibrahim said the risk of AI causing human extinction is "not zero," though she declined to assign a precise probability, calling anything more specific "just me guessing." Ibrahim signed the Center for AI Safety’s 2023 statement alongside the co-founders of Anthropic and OpenAI, which argued that mitigating AI extinction risk should be a global priority above nuclear war and pandemics. Three years later, she said it would be "irresponsible" not to keep discussing existential risks given the technology's development. Her warnings align with more alarming voices: Hinton, the "godfather of AI," sees an extinction risk of 10% to 20% in the next thirty years, while Amodei cites a 25% risk of the future going "really, really badly." Physicist Stephen Hawking gave similar warnings before ChatGPT existed. Ibrahim drew a parallel with the pandemic, noting catastrophic risks are not always the ones people see coming and that industries historically failed to weigh risk properly during earlier tech shifts like the internet and social media. She also expressed skepticism toward rosy forecasts from Elon Musk, Bezos, and Altman, who predicted cheap abundance, space habitation, and new job openings, respectively. Instead, Ibrahim said she was interested in using AI to resolve immediate issues like climate change and pollution from industrial waste, adding that AI should not benefit only a few companies.
