ChatGPT wants to be your next conversation partner

OpenAI’s latest voice model allows ChatGPT to carry on conversations more naturally, including continuing after being interrupted, slowing down speech when asked, and responding without awkward pauses. It can understand speech in real time, use brief acknowledgments like “uh-huh” or “I see,” and adjust its speaking pace on the fly. The updated voice mode integrates with other capabilities, such as searching the web, displaying weather forecasts, sports scores and stock prices, working with images and files, and providing real-time speech translation. OpenAI has strengthened safety features: if ChatGPT detects a potentially harmful conversation, it may adjust its response, display a warning, or end the conversation. For child and teen accounts, parents can disable voice mode and receive notifications if the AI detects potentially concerning topics. The new voice mode is being rolled out gradually on ChatGPT for the web, Android, and iOS. Users on the Go, Plus and Pro plans will have access to the full GPT-Live-1 model, while Free users will receive the lighter GPT-Live-1 mini version.
