Japanese police arrested a 15-year-old high school student in Tokorozawa, Saitama Prefecture, on suspicion of fraudulent business obstruction. The hacker allegedly used a program assisted by ChatGPT to launch a sustained cyberattack against Bandai Channel, the anime and tokusatsu streaming service operated by Bandai Namco Filmworks. In November, the hacker gained unauthorized access to the company's servers and systematically canceled the subscriptions of 46,812 members, causing massive fund withdrawals. Bandai Namco Filmworks temporarily halted all services and cut off access to its entire user base while investigating the breach. The hacker used ChatGPT to create a custom program that automated non-automated access to user accounts, forcing their large-scale deletion. The hacker also obtained personal information including email addresses and nicknames, though Bandai Namco Filmworks stated there is no confirmed evidence that this data has been publicly leaked or used for secondary fraud. The company said it will strive to prevent recurrence by further strengthening its security management system. The hacker admitted to the charges and said he did not hold a grudge against the victim companies, suggesting the incident was not motivated by economic gain.
