On Wednesday, Google introduced its first audio device built specifically for Gemini with the $99.99 Google Home Speaker, the first stand-alone smart speaker since the Nest Audio in September 2020. The new device allows natural language and multistep requests, such as “turn off all the lights except for my bedside lamp,” and can handle corrections mid-sentence. It will ship with 10 new voices capable of two-way conversations on nuanced topics. The speaker’s microphone can remain on briefly with the “Continued Conversation” feature for follow-up questions without saying “OK, Google.” The device has a 3D-knit textile wrapping and a rounded 3.4 x 4.2-inch design, available in Jade and Berry colors in the U.S., plus Hazel and Porcelain globally, with a new ring light indicating listening, thinking, or responding. Google will sell Google Home Premium subscription plans for $10 per month (or $100 per year) for advanced AI features, including free-flowing conversations with Gemini Live and summaries of Nest camera activity. Google will offer these advanced features for free for six months before requiring a subscription.
